This instructional manual has been developed in strict alignment with the rationalized Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) design, referencing the approved KLB Lower Primary Mathematics Pupil’s Book 2 (pages 217–280) and Teacher’s Guide (pages 1–57).

The downloadable Lesson Plans cover 7 comprehensive weeks and contain 35 systematically planned lessons (5 lessons per week) that guide learners through foundational arithmetic, place-value regrouping, measurement operations, currency management, and practical geometry.

The Lesson Plans are organized under the following strands and substrands:

    • Number Concept
      • Position of objects in number symbols and words – Identifying ordinal positions from 1st to 20th (first to twentieth) in athletic races, queues, and birth order
    • Whole Numbers
      • Counting forward and backward in tens from 1 to 1000 using counters and number lines
      • Reading numbers 1 to 1000 in symbols
      • Reading and writing numbers 1 to 100 in words (spelling compound tens: twenty-four, forty-seven, eighty-nine)
      • Number patterns up to 1000 – Determining pattern rules and working out missing numbers
    • Addition
      • Adding a 3-digit number to a 2-digit number vertically and horizontally with regrouping from ones to tens (sum not exceeding 1000)
      • Adding two 3-digit numbers without regrouping
      • Adding two 3-digit numbers with regrouping from ones to tens, and from tens to hundreds using place value charts, abacuses, and tins
      • Addition number patterns up to 1000
    • Subtraction
      • Subtracting a 3-digit number from a 3-digit number with regrouping from tens to ones
      • Subtracting two 3-digit numbers with regrouping from hundreds to tens
      • Subtraction number patterns up to 1000
    • Multiplication and Division
      • Multiplying single-digit numbers by 10 as repeated addition
      • Dividing 2-digit numbers by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 without remainders using counters and multiplication table links
    • Fractions
      • Eighth as part of a group – Identifying, folding, and shading 1/8 of shapes and sets of objects
    • Measurement
      • Length – Adding and subtracting length in metres (m) vertically and horizontally, including classroom measurement drills
      • Mass – Adding and subtracting mass in kilograms (kg) using balances and classroom model shop parcels
      • Capacity – Adding, subtracting, and estimating liquid capacity up to 5 litres (L) using 1-litre containers
      • Time – Adding and subtracting time in hours and minutes without conversion; estimating activity durations in hours; reading and writing time using “minutes past” and “minutes to” the hour on analogue and digital clocks
      • Money – Converting Kenyan currency denominations up to Sh. 1000 (notes and coins); creating 3-item shopping lists, finding total cost, and calculating change/balance
    • Geometry
      • Modelling combined shapes – Constructing composite 2D and 3D shapes (e.g., triangle on rectangle, cylinder with cone) using clay, plasticine, and cardboard

The lessons guide learners to consolidate practical mathematical competencies, including ordering items using ordinal numbers, performing multi-digit column addition and subtraction with place value borrowing/carrying, executing fast multiplication and division operations, measuring physical quantities with standard units (m, kg, L), budgeting money, and creating composite geometric models.

Each lesson follows a standard 40-minute structure comprising an Introduction (5 minutes), a 4-step Lesson Development (25 minutes) packed with concrete apparatus manipulations (place value tins, abacuses, metre rules, weighing balances, clock faces, play money), and a Conclusion (10 minutes) with oral verification drills. Guiding Key Inquiry Questions steer mathematical thinking, such as “What do you consider when adding numbers vertically?”, “How do we use multiplication tables to work out division questions?”, and “How do we tell and write time using 'past' and 'to' the hour?”

Core competencies developed include critical thinking and problem solving, self-efficacy, communication and collaboration, learning to learn, creativity and imagination, and digital literacy. Core values nurtured include unity, respect, honesty, integrity, responsibility, and patience, while addressing Pertinent and Contemporary Issues (PCIs) such as financial literacy, consumer education, time management, and environmental awareness.

Assessment strategies include chalkboard working demonstrations, abacus calculations, workbook speed drills, shop role-play assessments, and geometric model exhibitions. Every lesson plan concludes with an Extended Activity for home reinforcement and a dedicated Teacher Self-Evaluation section for instructional tracking.
