  SOA 1101 — Sociology and Anthropology provides the social and cultural framework for community-oriented nursing practice in Kenya across three compact units. The opening chapter defines culture, society, social groups, and norms, and establishes why social determinants (poverty, education, gender inequality) are stronger predictors of health outcomes than biology alone. Social and cultural practices in Kenya are treated with clinical specificity, including female genital cutting, dietary taboos in pregnancy, traditional medicine use and its drug-interaction risks, son preference, and the health roles of CHAK and Muslim health organizations. Social change drivers (urbanization, mobile technology, female education) are linked to shifts in Kenya's disease burden. The socialization chapter explains social stratification and mobility as health determinants, presents a five-row table of Kenya's major health institutions from the Ministry of Health to community health units, and covers group dynamics through a group-type classification table, the five stages of group formation, and the importance of interdisciplinary teams. Policy content includes Sessional Paper No. 10, the cost-sharing policy, Kenya Vision 2030, and Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya. The family chapter covers eight family types in a table with health implications, the five functions of the family, determinants of family health, and patient rights in community care. They are written for KRCHN Year 1 students preparing for examinations and for community nursing practice in Kenya's culturally diverse settings.
