  RHM 1103 — Introduction to Reproductive Health and Midwifery establishes the policy, anatomical, and embryological foundation for all subsequent maternal and newborn health modules. The history chapter traces the global reproductive health agenda through the Safe Motherhood Initiative, ICPD Cairo 1994, MDGs 4 and 5, SDG 3, and Kenya's Beyond Zero Campaign, and explains Kenya's NRHP within the context of the country's current MMR of approximately 355 per 100,000 live births. The six elements of quality reproductive health care and the nine components of reproductive health are covered in full. The anatomy chapter covers the male reproductive system from testis to penis with all accessory glands and their secretions, and the female reproductive system in comprehensive detail: Caldwell-Moloy pelvic classification (gynaecoid, android, anthropoid, platypelloid), key obstetric pelvic diameters (diagonal conjugate, true conjugate, transverse diameter), all female internal and external reproductive organs, anatomical relations of the uterus to the bladder and rectum, the 28-day menstrual cycle with its hormonal control, and the physiology of lactation. The embryology chapter covers fertilization, implantation, hCG production, the embryonic germ layers, fetal development from 9 to 40 weeks in a reference table, the fetal skull bones, sutures, and fontanelles, the three fetal circulation shunts (foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus, ductus venosus), amniotic fluid volume and its clinical significance (oligohydramnios and polyhydramnios), and umbilical cord anatomy. They are written for KRCHN Year 1 students as a comprehensive reference for obstetric anatomy and reproductive health policy.
