  PSY 1102 — Psychology applies the science of human behaviour and mental processes to nursing practice across three units. The concepts chapter defines the scope of psychology and identifies its most nursing-relevant branches: health, developmental, abnormal, and social psychology. The theories of personality chapter covers Maslow's hierarchy in a five-tier table with nursing applications, Freud's psychosexual stages and the seven key defence mechanisms (repression, denial, projection, rationalization, regression, and displacement) with clinical nursing examples, Pavlov's classical conditioning, Skinner's operant conditioning, and Bandura's observational learning, all applied to patient education and behaviour change. Piaget's four cognitive stages are explained with guidance on health communication at each level.
