  CHN 1102 — Community Health Nursing I introduces the philosophy, principles, and legal foundations of population-focused nursing practice in Kenya. The history and concepts chapter traces community health nursing from Lillian Wald and the Alma Ata Declaration to Kenya's Community Health Policy (2020–2030) and the community health unit model, defines community, community health, and community health nursing, and sets out the philosophy of CHN including the principle that prevention is superior to cure and that the community, not only the individual, is the client. Alma Ata's five principles of primary health care are explained with their practical implications. The goals and seven functions of the community health nurse (care provider, educator, advocate, case manager, collaborator, researcher, and administrator) are covered in full. The family health chapter defines the family, family health, and family-centred care, covers the six determinants of family health, presents the eight family types found in Kenya, the five health tasks of the family, and Duvall's six-stage family development task framework from newly married couples to ageing families. The home visit chapter explains the clinical advantages of home-based assessment and provides a seven-step home visit process. Patient rights in community health are set out across six dimensions (information, consent, privacy, non-discrimination, refusal, and complaint). The legal chapter covers constitutional law, statutory law, and a seven-row table of Kenyan acts relevant to nursing (Children's Act, Criminal Penal Code, Public Health Act, Food Drugs Act, OSHA, Marriage Act, and Young Persons Act). They are written for KRCHN Year 1 students preparing for community health nursing examinations and supervised community field practice.
