This literature paper requires candidates to answer a total of four questions within a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The first question on Oral Literature is compulsory. Candidates must then select one question from each of the three other sections covering set books. Each question is worth 20 marks, for a total of 80 marks.
The exam is structured into five distinct sections:
- Sehemu ya A: Fasihi Simulizi (Oral Literature): This is a compulsory section. The question is based on an excerpt of a praise poem (maghani) and further tests knowledge on other genres like ngomezi (drum poetry), their features, and functions in society.
- Sehemu ya B: Tamthilia (Play) - Bembea ya Maisha: This section offers a choice between two questions. Candidates can either tackle a question based on a specific excerpt, analyzing its context, characters, themes, and style, or write a broader essay on the portrayal of women or the theme of humanity in the play.
- Sehemu ya C: Riwaya (Novel) - Nguu za Jadi: Students choose one of two questions. One is a general essay question asking how the novel serves as a mirror for contemporary African nations. The other is an excerpt-based question focusing on character traits and the challenges related to work as depicted in the novel.
- Sehemu ya D: Hadithi Fupi (Short Story) - Mapambazuko ya Machweo: This section presents two questions, each based on an excerpt from a different short story ("Harubu ya maisha" and "Mzimu wa kipwere"). The questions test analysis of context, stylistic devices, themes, characterization, and the role of the narrator and setting.
- Sehemu ya E: Ushairi (Poetry): This section contains one question based on a provided Swahili poem. It assesses the candidate's ability to analyze the poem's theme, form (umbo), poetic devices (arudhi), literary style (tamathali), and tone. It also requires a prose-paraphrase of one of the stanzas.
