  This is a Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) design developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). The curriculum was first published in 2017 and revised in 2024 following curriculum rationalisation based on recommendations from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms and continuous curriculum monitoring and evaluation.

  The curriculum is delivered through thematic contexts such as Greetings, School, Home, Community, Weather, Animals, Transport and Daily Life situations to enhance meaningful language use. It also provides detailed assessment guidelines, performance-based rubrics, suggested learning resources (including print, realia and digital materials), and recommendations for interactive and learner-centred activities to support the development of communicative competence in English.
